What Makes Yirgacheffe Special

This release features wild heirloom varieties—Kurume, Dega, and Wolisho—from the renowned Yirgacheffe region in southern Ethiopia. Each cherry is hand-picked by smallholder farmers, then washed, processed, and dried naturally in the sun on raised African beds.

Grown in one of the highest-altitude coffee zones at 1,900–2,150 meters above sea level, the cooler temperatures slow the growth cycle of the coffee trees. This allows the flavor profile to fully develop and evolve—unlocking depth, clarity, and nuanced notes.

Hand-selected Wild Harvested Beans

Ethiopia is considered the birthplace of coffee, and Yirgacheffe sits at the heart of that heritage. These are some of the oldest indigenous coffee varieties in the world. They are true landraces—wild strains that have evolved naturally over thousands of years in Ethiopia’s highlands, shaped by altitude, climate, soil, and microbial ecology.

Unlike modern hybrids, these varieties were never bred in labs or commercial nurseries. They’ve been preserved through generations of traditional farming and wild forest growth.

The Finished Cup

Light roasted to preserve its unique character, this release carries some of the classic tasting notes of Ethiopian coffee. Opening with fragrant jasmine, followed by bright lemon zest, grounding black tea and rounding out the cup with the subtle sweetness of stone fruit. Each batch is third party lab tested to ensure it’s mold and toxin-free.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

Ceremonial Grade Yirgacheffe comes in a beautiful keepsake canister, showcasing art from Ethiopian artist Besufikad Ephrem, inspired by the region’s culture and coffee heritage. Inside, you’ll find a fully compostable bag, designed to preserve your coffee’s freshness.

The Artist Behind the Label

Ethiopian painter Besufikad Ephrem creates deeply reflective paintings that explore life and the dignity of human existence. His work is rooted in the beauty of impermanence. This commissioned piece honors Ethiopia as the birthplace of coffee—focusing on the land, the people, and the cultural rituals that shaped it. From the hands that harvest to the traditions that endure, his art invites reflection on the deep connection between coffee, culture, and ceremony.
